Description

We present a simple theoretical study of the fast ion effect on the ExB staircase in a magnetized plasma, extending previous works by Lilley-Nyqvist14 and Garbet21. In this study, the ExB staircase is a self-generated radially periodic ExB flow structure described by the wave kinetic equation and the modified Hasegawa-Mima equation, with the trappings of drift wave packets by the periodic zonal flow potential as a basic saturation mechanism. Analyzing the condition for clump-hole pair formation from the zonal potential well, we examine the concreteness of a given ExB staircase. The effect of fast ion-induced dilution on this ExB staircase stability is then presented.
